Chalet Reflection

The sound of light

The inspiration for this project comes straight from the project site, which is located directly on the shore of Lake St. Moritz - hence the idea of the reflection of light that is constantly changing the surface of the lake.

The water, depending on the season, changes its reflection, lighting up the surrounding landscape in the spring and summer season and offering reflection of light in its purity given by the frozen lake in the winter.

The meaning of light and the analysis of it’s possible reflections are reinterpreted architecturally and trickle down into the smallest details of the interior design concept.

Concept

The meaning of light and the analysis of it’s possible reflections are reinterpreted architecturally and trickle down into the smallest details of the interior design concept. Mirrored surfaces catch the light in every corner of the house and illuminate glass, metal and wood, as well as other materials of that make up the interior of this chalet. Light is the key element that gives meaning to every detail of this building. The whole structure allows for a unique experience that makes you feel connected to the immersive idea of light and nature. As you enter the symmetrically centered open-plan living area, you will find yourself in the midst of this “light show”. The idea of a reflection is staged through the dialogue of symmetries and asymmetries of the glazing and the roof construction. This architectural ensemble creates a unique communication of interior and exterior elements right from the bottom up. Directly experiencing the reflection of the lake that envelops the philosophy of this building, is possible from all 4 bedrooms.

The gym and wellness area are also designed to be a part of the intricate play of light and reflection, all while boasting a spectacular view of Lake St. Moritz. The swimming pool, which can be used all year round, can be found in front of the building, visually connecting the interior and exterior elements of the house and making the reflection of the lake even more tangible.

One of the five levels is entirely concipated as a private area for personnel and is therefore also home to a fully equipped chefs’ kitchen, a laundry room, as well as to spaces for the technical aspects of the house. The magic of the lighting effects continue on the garage level that stages another imposing entrance of the property, landing area and wine cellar. The emotional tension that characterizes natural light, is recreated through the lighting design. The spaces are connected and intertwined, and come together to create one single element. The garage directly transforms into a living area for cars, and can be experienced as a highly emblematic area, that communicates the value and refinement of the property from the first moment of entering.

Light enters freely into all the rooms through the glass balconies, a luminescence that stands in contrast with the building's traditional stone walls and antique wood. It is this tension between the sleek and rustic materials that best represents the philosophy of Chalet Reflection.
